Understanding Shield Laws
Huggable Loveable Uterus is partnering with Hilt and Helm Pittsburgh Fencing Club to demonstrably exemplify Shield Laws in a sword-bearing, shield-carrying, protective dance with The Uterus. We are specifically using the Ethiopian shotel model of fencing in acknowledgement of the reproductive diseases and maternal health impacts that are dominant in Black American communities. What is a Shield Law?
Interstate shield policies, or Shield Laws, are designed to address threats to reproductive healthcare access and our right to self-govern our uterus-bearing bodies. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, abortion has been made illegal or intensively restricted in 20 states. In defense of reproductive freedom, there are states that enacted Shield Laws to protect abortion providers, helpers, and patients from states and individuals attempting to enforce a restrictive states’ abortion laws beyond its own borders. Do We Have Shield Laws in Pennsylvania?
The answer is complicated. We do not in that our state legislature, voting in Harrisburg, has not passed Shield Laws. At the same time, we do have a Commonwealth-wide executive order ensuring that out-of-state patients seeking abortion care in Pennsylvania can do so without fear of being arrested or detained at the request of another state. Pennsylvania is also a member of the nationwide Reproductive Freedom Alliance. Read up on the details at pa.gov/freedom-to-choose.

The Artist
Carolyn P. Speranza
Carolyn P. Speranza is a Pittsburgh based multidisciplinary, visual and conceptual artist. Speranza uses light, video and assemblage to create installation art environments, public art and self-illuminating art objects. Her artistic activism is community-based and her approach to organizing is intersectional. She is currently bringing “The Huggable Loveable Uterus” to life in performance, costuming, visual art and participatory engagement, with the mission of demystifying the uterus, giving voice and platform to those who have them.
